Abstract

This article proposes a semiotic analysis of azulejo tilework on seven emblematic historic buildings in Fafe, constructed during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. This study contends that azulejo tilework transcended its ornamental and protective roles, functioning as a visual text and a primary instrument of social distinction. Employing a semiotic analysis, the façades commissioned by “brasileiros de torna-viagem” are compared with those of the local traditional elite. To this end, interpretive reading draws on the concepts of “denotation”, “connotation”, and “myth”, decoding the visual syntax and cultural context of these constructions. The findings indicate the presence of two competing visual discourses. The first, the “Brazilian” narrative, utilises avant-garde azulejo tilework (art nouveau), exuberant relief work, or explicit colour references (green and yellow) to communicate cosmopolitan identity and the success of newly acquired wealth. The second narrative, associated with the established elite, responds through revivalism (Pombaline patterns) or the selection of prestigious productions, signifying learned taste, historical legitimacy, and wealth linked to cultural refinement. It is concluded that the tiled façade in Fafe functioned as a discursive space in which the elites of the belle époque publicly negotiated and competed for their identity and social hegemony. Thus, the study contributes to the fields of communication sciences and cultural studies by highlighting how urban visual culture and surface design give tangible form to power dynamics.
